Over three days, ‘Does God Exist?’ engaged approximately 300 participants in a participatory data visualization project at IIT Hyderabad, renowned for its focus on science, entrepreneurship, and design. Prompted by news media reports hinting at non-secular practices within the institution, we aimed to probe student beliefs and experiences – mainly an understanding of whether or not God exists – as the title suggests. The initiative fostered an environment conducive to discussing the influence of religion on politics and potential intersections between science and spirituality. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their beliefs, exploring why they embraced or rejected the concept of God and delving into personal experiences of faith or atheism. Through interactive scales and polar questions, the installation provided a dynamic, visually charged walkthrough of beliefs prevalent among the student body with diverse make-up of being pan-Indian. It prompted reflections on the meaning of life, perceptions of miracles, and the objects of worship, sparking widespread discourse on the rationale behind individual belief systems. Overall, ‘Does God Exist?’ served as a platform for introspection and dialogue, offering valuable insights into the diverse perspectives shaping the campus community's worldview on matters of faith and spirituality with numerous participants being grateful and quite introspective, having explored the installation. It gave crucial understanding as to what a student belonging to an institution of science made of faith and its prevalence in India.
